Research Fellow

Baykeeper seeks an enthusiastic college graduate interested in a challenging position focused on improving environmental laws and developing sound scientific policies to protect the Bay. The Research Fellowship is a full-time, two-year position, appropriate for someone considering graduate studies in environmental law or policy.

Responsibilities
The Fellow’s primary responsibilities will be researching and providing analysis on science, policy, and legal issues related to the health of the San Francisco Bay, investigating new cases, reviewing and analyzing regulatory agency files and preparing comments on proposed agency actions. Secondary responsibilities will include maintaining legal and program files, filing, scanning and providing other administrative and organizational support, including drafting materials for external communication. This position may require some extended hours on evenings and weekends as necessary to meet deadlines, assist with community events, and attend public meetings.

Qualifications
Qualified candidates will hold a four-year degree in environmental policy or science, or a related field, and have a demonstrated interest in water-related issues. He or she must be proficient in Microsoft Office – particularly Excel – have strong research and writing skills and be able to independently learn and communicate about technical water quality and ecosystem issues.

The ideal candidate will have relevant coursework in some or all of the following: GIS analysis and mapping, environmental law, environmental policy, aquatic chemistry, urban planning or land use and environmental economics.

Compensation
This is a two-year, full-time position, with an annual stipend starting in the mid-$30,000s and excellent health benefits.

Development Assistant

Baykeeper seeks an enthusiastic individual to play a key role in our development and communications program. The Development Assistant position is appropriate for someone in the early stages of a career in nonprofit fundraising and communications.

Responsibilities
The Development Assistant is a well-rounded position that contributes to initiatives in fundraising, communications and operations for Baykeeper. This person will:

  • Manage Baykeeper’s donor database and records, including analyzing giving trends.
  • Assist with drafting, editing and executing electronic and print communications, including donor acknowledgements and solicitations, website content, newsletters, e-newsletters, brochures and annual reports, as well as proposals and reports to institutional funders.
  • Carefully coordinate an extensive fundraising and communications calendar. Assist with planning of Baykeeper’s development, communications and organizational strategies.
  • Assist with planning and executing fundraising events, including the annual Baykeeper Gala.
  • Manage some operational tasks for the organization.
  • Qualifications

  • 1-2 years experience managing projects in a fast-paced, professional environment.
  • Experience in database management; experience with Raiser’s Edge or other donor management databases is preferred.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Superior attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience with website and/or e-newsletter tools is helpful.
  • Experience with publication management and print vendors is helpful.
  • Ability to learn about water quality advocacy for San Francisco Bay and communicate about the issues in a compelling way.
  • Willingness to take on a wide variety of tasks in a small, team-oriented nonprofit environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in nonprofit pursuits; experience in nonprofit fundraising and/or communications is highly valued. Demonstrated commitment to environmental protection.
  • Ability to work extended hours on evenings and weekends as necessary.
